We must read the Word and grow in our knowledge. If you don’t know the truth in the Word, then you are susceptible to the lies of the world. Keep learning, for the times are upon us in which the lies are becoming more deceptive, and the truth is no longer desired in the world.
We must discern when a lie has a sprinkling of truth lest we be deceived by the lie that is hidden within. “Everyone will deceive his neighbor, and will not speak the truth; they have taught their tongue to speak lies; they weary themselves to commit iniquity” (Jeremiah 9:5 NKJV).
However, knowledge by itself will not be enough. Your ability to discern the truth by what you know will fall short of the deceptions that will come before you. The time is on us in which we must grow in our spiritual life that we can discern by His Spirit in us what we could never discern on our own power.
Just as you cannot read words in a dark room, so your spirit cannot understand Scripture apart from the enlightenment from the Holy Spirit. Pray, “that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the eyes of your understanding being enlightened…” (Ephesians 1:17-18 NKJV).
Spiritual discernment will show you what books cannot teach you. When the Holy Spirit reveals a thing and then gives you the discernment to know what it means, you can then operate in the natural using the discernment given to you in the spiritual.
Don’t only pray for a sign from God, but also the discernment to know what it means. “O Lord, listen to my cry; give me the discerning mind you promised.” (Psalm 119:169 NLT).
When Jesus asked people if they had eyes to see or ears to hear, He was not speaking to their natural senses but their spiritual life. If you want to grow in the Spirit, you must yield to the Spirit to greater degrees. To the degree you rely upon yourself, the Holy Spirit cannot help you.
The greater the yielding to the Holy Spirit, the greater the filling of the Holy Spirit. “Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is…be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:17-18 NKJV).
Spiritual discernment is not only for the prophets and the priests but for that man or woman who dares to go deeper in their walk with Christ Jesus. The Lord pours out His wisdom to those who ask and those who are humble enough to receive. The proud don’t ask.
The key to making good decisions is asking the Lord to help you. “If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5 AMP).
There is a spiritual realm right before us if we would only see it. There are angels and demons around us, yet we only believe what we can see, and it is this limitation that keeps our eyes firmly closed to what is going on right before our eyes. Believe beyond what you can see, and it is there you will find the Lord.
The things of this world are anchors to the spiritual realm. “But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14 NKJV).
No matter what your question is, without spiritual discernment, you are on your own. You may get advice from people, but God will remain silent until you are ready to receive from Him. Spiritual discernment will come by your faith and your humility and not by any title given by man.
We aren’t supposed to chase spiritual gifts but to walk in them. “So it is with you, since you are so very eager to have spiritual gifts and manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in ways that will build up the church [spiritually]” (1 Corinthians 14:12 AMP).
Spiritual discernment is not just for the big decisions in your life but the daily walk in which we are living. The more you are led by the Holy Spirit, the less you will go your own way. When you go the way that God has for you, then you will have a peace about you. His will is better than yours.
Better to live one day in the will of God than a thousand going your own way. “Stop imitating the ideals and opinions of the culture around you, but be inwardly transformed by the Holy Spirit through a total reformation of how you think. This will empower you to discern God’s will as you live a beautiful life, satisfying and perfect in his eyes” (Romans 12:2 TPT).
There are people around you that desperately need you to spiritually discern what is going on in their life and how you might pray for them. When we see the spirit behind someone, good or bad, we gain the discernment by which we can better understand them. Pray your eyes will be opened.
If you want to teach about being Spirit-led, then you must be Spirit-led in your teaching. “We don’t speak about these things with words taught us by human wisdom, but with words taught by the Spirit, as we explain spiritual things to spiritual people.” (1 Corinthians 2:13 ISV).
My prayer for you is to be filled with the Holy Spirit and be spiritually discerning in your life. May the Lord open your eyes and open your ears, giving you the spiritual enlightenment by which you can see the world around you. The time is now. We need to discern the times we are in.
Blessings to you,
