Cutting Soul Ties

Years ago, I had a wonderful mentor and sister in Christ whose name was Dorothy Ray. Back then she was 93 years old, with a Spirit-filled life on fire greater than most I have ever met. When she would anoint me with oil, I could barely remain standing because of the presence of the Holy Spirit upon her. Dorothy is in heaven now and I look forward to someday joining her there.

Dorothy had some life-changing teachings on cutting soul ties. A soul tie is something that has tied your soul to the natural realm preventing you from ascending in your spiritual life. These soul ties are like ropes that tie down a blimp so that it cannot soar up in the air. These ties prevent you from the freedom and joy that you are meant to have in the Lord.

The faster you forgive, the less burdensome this life will be. “And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you” (Ephesians 4:32).

The more baggage you carry, the harder your journey will be. “Do not remember the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing…” (Isaiah 43:18-19).

Bitter roots yield rotten fruit. “Pursue peace with all people…lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble… ” (Hebrews 12:14-15).

One example of a soul tie is something that was said or done to you in your past. It could even be words of rejection when you were still in the womb. I have learned that the common thread amongst us all is that we have all been hurt. These soul ties create footholds from which the Devil can hurt you, shame you or guilt you away from God. It is the plan of the Devil that you would hold on to your pain.

The deeper the wound, the deeper the healing must be. “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation…” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4).

There are some things in your life that you need to sacrifice on the altar, that they would no longer remain alive in you. “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice” (Ephesians 4:31).

Another example of a soul tie would be things you have said or done to other people, or even said or done to yourself. Things you have been involved with that are evil and are against God. Hurtful words you have said. Declarations against yourself. People you have harmed or lusted after. These soul ties create a foothold for the Devil. You may have stopped the act, but the ties have yet to be cut.

Every sin makes a crevice that gives the devil a foothold in your life. “Don’t give the devil a way to defeat you” (Ephesians 4:27 Easy-to-Read Version).

If you want to be set free from sin, you only have to let go of it. “Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:11).

The greatest deliverance for man is from himself. Jesus said, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me” (Luke 9:23).

One day Dorothy and I were talking, and she shared with me on how I could cut the soul ties in my life. She told me to speak them out loud, and to declare that I cut all ties of the things from my past. We must speak out loud when we declare a thing. Especially if we are speaking against the demonic realm, as the demonic cannot read our minds, but can hear our voices. And when we are declaring a thing, we must ask the Holy Spirit to help us, to remind us of what we must cut away, and to empower us not to let the ties return. Never forget, the power of the Holy Spirit is in you, but you must lean into it.

Often the things that are tearing you apart are what God is using to build you up. “…we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4).

When others treat you badly, learn from it so that you would not do the same. “If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men” (Romans 12:18).

If you want to be set free from these soul ties, you must cut them. Just like you were taking scissors and cutting the ropes that hold down the blimp, you must one by one cut the soul ties that hold you down. You must forgive others. You must confess that God would forgive you your sins. You must cut yourself free from sin that you have already been forgiven from. You must declare and decree freedom over your soul from every soul tie of the enemy. A blanket statement is not enough, each tie must be cut one by one. And once you do this, your mind will be freer than it has ever been before.

God can use the most evil people in your life to cause the greatest good for the Kingdom. “But as for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good…” (Genesis 50:20).

You cannot carry a handful of darkness and walk in the light. “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light” (Ephesians 5:8).

I began this process in my life. I would ask the Lord to remind me of hurtful things and then I would cut the soul ties to each one. Out loud, I would say, “I cut all soul ties to [whatever the thing was].” When we ask the Lord to show us all these many soul ties from our past, it is shocking how many there are. I did this cutting of ties for all areas of my life every day while exercising, and slowly, I began to feel the lifting of the burden. It took me weeks of daily soul tie cutting to finally set myself free.

Friend, I want you to know, you can be set free from everything done against you, or that you have done. God intends that you would live a life set free by the power of Christ in you. You can ascend spiritually once you cut the soul ties to the natural.

Blessings to you,

Paul Balius

  1. The reason we aren’t free is often our childish interpretation of things via ignorance of God’s Word excused by responsibilities & horizontal focus habits. Scissors are a child’s tool for weaker things to separate & reform. This need for likely needing more powerful cutting really got my attention, prophetically. Significant strongholds as with Jericho level protection need that double edged (sharpest two witness minimum of His over every matter) to get through tough cords or bindings in our thinking by so many years of reinforced, twisted truth, without kindness, which we have allowed to take over our souls & try to serve from. The experiences & people involved are as powerful as we make them. Yet even Jesus couldn’t & wouldn’t heal & agree in everything & didn’t connect well with everyone. Health soul ties were His concern- those who do God’s will. In my zeal to reach many I also had to learn this difficult reality that I just read in 2 Corinthians 11. His overcoming wisdom is not fully realised & used until we grasp these foundational truths of true freedom by dealing with false hope. The enemy finds it too easy to masquerade as an angel of light as we bow to opinions of others without an inner witness blend of the Word prayed through to total God-confidence. Very important to strive for mastery of this teaching until Love can flow free-indeed. Expectations are formed & empowered by our understanding of ‘what’s at stake’ if we don’t hear God on what He won’t compete with & waits for surrender over. Downloading His higher thoughts for each situation gives us the authority & joy to overcome evil with good He imparts, which we can’t find in our own tied up souls. “We regard nobody according to the flesh. We once regarded Christ that way, but no longer” has been a big perspective thing for me in practicing this. Great insight here to generate mutual benefit in every area, in domino effect. When we can help others find this level of freedom, with a Love foundation versus self preservation, this process shared completely can change our world. Prayer & fasting usually required. Thanks for the strong recharge on this often neglected subject, Paul.

    1. Thank you so much, I am sure Dorothy Ray would have appreciated your comments about her teaching. She was a special sister in Christ for me, and I was so blessed to of known her.

  2. Excellent, simple, freeing…thank you. I have actually done this over the years, but not as methodically, as your article describes. “Soul ties”…freedom…my choice. Thankful for your insight.
