Becoming Spiritual

It is the most blessed person on earth who becomes more spiritual in their life. The spiritual life is filled with meaning and purpose. It is a life we are meant to have in which we are content and at peace, living our lives in a way that pleases the Lord.

Only the Lord can help you to live a life pleasing to Himself. “But if God’s Spirit lives in you, you are under the control of your spiritual nature, not your corrupt nature. Whoever doesn’t have the Spirit of Christ doesn’t belong to him. However, if Christ lives in you, your bodies are dead because of sin, but your spirits are alive because you have God’s approval” (Romans 8:9-10 GW).

Becoming spiritual is something that every believer can do. It is not reserved for some special few but is readily available to that willing soul who desires to take hold of it. You were meant to become spiritual in your life.

When God is your all in all, your shortcomings won’t even matter. “Yes, God is working in you to help you want to do what pleases him. Then he gives you the power to do it” (Philippians 2:13 ICB).

Becoming spiritual is not something reserved for when we enter heaven, but is something we can have now, where heaven enters us and our lives are transformed. It is within your grasp at this very moment.

You don’t have to move one inch to get nearer to God, but only turn to Him. “From then on Jesus began to preach, ‘Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near’” (Matthew 4:17 NLT).

There are no classrooms or programs needed to become spiritual because the work to do so belongs to the Holy Spirit. The only thing that you must do in order for the Holy Spirit to work on you is to surrender yourself and let Him.

Whenever we’re not strong in a spiritual gift, it’s because we’re not weak before God. “As you yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life” (Galatians 5:16 TPT).

Once you have salvation, you can then receive the Holy Spirit. But until you allow yourself to be controlled by the Holy Spirit, you will still be controlled by your flesh. There is a war going on inside you, and the one who is winning is the one you are yielding to.

Spirituality surpasses everything in the natural. “For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do” (Galatians 5:17 ESV).

Becoming spiritual is the process of yielding to the Spirit of God and saying no to the desires of your flesh. It does not take your strength to win over your flesh; rather, it takes your weakness to let the Holy Spirit dominate your life.

The difference between a natural man and a spiritual man is that one pleases their flesh and the other pleases the Spirit of God. “Those who are dominated by the sinful nature think about sinful things, but those who are controlled by the Holy Spirit think about things that please the Spirit” (Romans 8:5 NLT).

Becoming spiritual is shifting away from the natural. To every natural thing you say no to, there is a shift in your life towards the spiritual. This is not just a shift from the bad natural things, but also the good natural things.

Being spiritual is doing those things that do not come naturally. “Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good.” (Romans 12:21 CJB).

One way towards becoming spiritual is to start to exercise your spiritual man against your flesh. Fasting from a natural thing builds up your power in the spiritual. The more you can say no and mean it to your natural, the more it will be defeated and weakened.

To the extent that you die to your old self, you will live for the Lord. “Strip yourselves of your former nature [put off and discard your old unrenewed self] which characterized your previous manner of life and becomes corrupt through lusts and desires that spring from delusion; and be constantly renewed in the spirit of your mind [having a fresh mental and spiritual attitude]” (Ephesians 4:22-23 AMPC).

When I fast from food, my natural flesh cries out and pleads through my soul for relief. But when my spirit man is determined not to yield, and the Holy Spirit is in me helping my spirit man, my natural flesh starts to comply and fall into the proper subservient place.

Spiritual strength is not fueled by natural nutrition. “And when He [Jesus] had come into the house, His disciples asked Him privately, ‘Why could we not cast it out?’ So He said to them, ‘This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting’” (Mark 9:28-29 NKJV).

Becoming spiritual is allowing the Holy Spirit to guide us, especially in our thoughts. Our natural thoughts are ever selfish, complaining, and justifying ourselves as if we are always right. Being spiritual is having the mind of Christ, carving holy thoughts that are humble in nature and full of truth, hope, and kindness.

The only competition you should have in Christianity is between your new spiritual self and the old fleshly self that you used to be. “Do not lie to one another, for you have stripped off the old self with its evil practices, and have put on the new [spiritual] self who is being continually renewed in true knowledge in the image of Him who created the new self” (Colossians 3:9-10 AMP).

Becoming spiritual is a wonderful journey of walking with God and trusting that He has you. To make this journey, you must make it your life to give your every frustration and worry to Him. To be spiritual in your life, you must give the natural things to Him.

The more you can let go, the lighter your load will be on your journey. “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you” (1 Peter 5:7 NIV).

Becoming spiritual is a choice you have in every situation, to either be controlled by your flesh or to allow yourself to be controlled by the Holy Spirit. This is where most will stop in their journey and stay in their flesh. What will you do? The choice is yours.

It’s either your way or God’s way, and your choice forever matters. “Today I am giving you a choice of two ways. And I ask heaven and earth to be witnesses of your choice. You can choose life or death. The first choice will bring a blessing. The other choice will bring a curse. So choose life! Then you and your children will live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19 ERV).

Blessings to you always,

Paul Balius
