The sum of your life is the sum of the choices you have made along the way. The more good choices you’ve made, the better your life will be. We can never go back and change a bad choice, but we can look ahead and pray that God will help us to make good choices going forward.
The sum of your life is all the choices that you make. “But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15 NLT).
If you want to make better choices, then you need wisdom to discern what the best choice will be. You cannot use earthy wisdom, which depends on what others will think. Rather, you need heavenly wisdom, which depends on what our sovereign God wants you to do.
If you want to make wise choices, simply ask God to help you. “If any of you lacks wisdom [to guide him through a decision or circumstance], he is to ask of [our benevolent] God, who gives to everyone generously and without rebuke or blame, and it will be given to him” (James 1:5 AMP).
Sometimes, it’s not a choice of good or bad, but good and better. You have before you God’s best and also the world’s meager alternative. The difference is in the longevity of the benefits from the choice, one being eternal and the other lasting for, at most, your lifetime.
Good choices are the best investment for an eternal reward. “‘Pay attention!’ [says Yeshua,] ‘I am coming soon, and my rewards are with me to give to each person according to what he has done. I am the ‘A’ and the ‘Z,’ the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End’” (Revelation 22:12-13 CJB).
We tend to put more weight on bigger choices than we do on smaller ones. We think the bigger the choice, the greater the risk, and so surely, the bigger choices require more consideration. But know this: every choice matters, and even the smallest ones define who you are.
The biggest tests are found in the smallest of choices. “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a person sows, this he will also reap” (Galatians 6:7 NASB).
When you choose words to speak, your words may be few, but their impact can be tremendous. It is like the rudder on a ship; it is small in size but great with an impact on the direction of the ship. It’s better to speak less and speak better than it is to respond more quickly.
It’s either your way or God’s way, and your choice forever matters. “Today I am giving you a choice of two ways. And I ask heaven and earth to be witnesses of your choice. You can choose life or death. The first choice will bring a blessing. The other choice will bring a curse. So choose life! Then you and your children will live.” (Deuteronomy 30:19 ERV).
When you choose to listen to God, it will be there His instructions will follow. Through His Word, He will guide you, and in the recesses of your heart, the Holy Spirit will convict you. If you are not in the presence of God, know that this is your choice and not His.
When presented with a choice, determine in your heart to error on the side of holiness. “But like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; because it is written: ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’” (1 Peter 1:15-16 NASB).
Don’t agonize over your past bad choices, but make it your life’s mission to make better choices going forward. The devil always points back to where you have gone wrong, whereas the Spirit of Christ always points forward to where He would have you go.
Every choice is an opportunity to change your life. “Establish my steps and direct them by [means of] Your word; let not any iniquity have dominion over me” (Psalm 119:133 AMPC).
Never underestimate the implications of the choices that stand before you. How you treat another person is what God sees when He watches over you. Choose to have more compassion and choose to be more kind, and you’ll receive a smile from your Father in heaven.
When given the choice, choose mercy. “Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy” (Matthew 5:7 NASB).
Making good choices is not hard when you rely on the strength of Christ Jesus to help you. Every bad choice is rooted in the evil of your pride that refused to place your choices before Jesus, where He could lead by His Holy Spirit. Be humble enough to seek His help, and He will help you.
Pride strives, humility yields, and your choice eternally matters. “Thus says the Lord God: ‘…Nothing shall remain the same. Exalt the humble, and humble the exalted’” (Ezekiel 21:26 NKJV).
What we choose to eat and how we choose to treat our body matters. What words we choose to use and the attitude we have when we are speaking matters. What we do and what we pray about matters. Let your choices prove that God is reigning in your life.
It’s not what you have that matters, but who you are. “Choose a good reputation over great riches; being held in high esteem is better than silver or gold” (Proverbs 22:1 NLT).
Blessings to you,
