The Spiritual Gift

Just as birds can’t swim and fish can’t fly, so a man must walk in his gifting. “But one and the same Spirit works all these things [various gifts], distributing to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11 NKJV).

There are many spiritual gifts, and the Lord always knows which is the right one for you. He may give you a gift for a season or give it to you for a lifetime. The gift is not for us to have but for us to be His vessel that the gift would be a blessing to those around us.

The title you live matters more than the title you have. “As each one has received some spiritual gift, he should use it to serve others, like good managers of God’s many-sided grace — if someone speaks, let him speak God’s words; if someone serves, let him do so out of strength that God supplies; so that in everything God may be glorified through Yeshua the Messiah — to him be glory and power forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11 CJB).

Your spiritual gift may fall into one of the spiritual gifts we understand, but the gift combined with you will always make it special. The gift will be unique to you because you are uniquely made by God. Don’t expect anything standard when it has the stamp of the supernatural.

If you have to tell people what your spiritual gift is, then consider it isn’t your gift. “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other” (1 Corinthians 12:7 NLT).

The spiritual gift is an effective tool in the hands of a believer surrendered to God. When you walk in the gift in humility, it will be there that the gift flows effectively. The kingdom is never ruled by pride, and the gifts given for kingdom work are no different.

You have to kneel down to pick up a gift. Proud men have empty hands. “…God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble” (James 4:6).

It is more important to have the Giver than the gift. If you have the Giver, then the Giver has you, and everything is at your disposal. But if you only have the gift, it is the gift that has you, and it won’t be of any value to the kingdom.

Seek the gifts, and you may get something. Seek the Giver, and you get everything. “And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength” (Deuteronomy 6:5 NASB).

It is better to have the right spirit than a greater spirit ruling within you. The evil one will play on your desire to be higher with a gift and deceive many with a counterfeit gift to make them feel more important. If the gift lifts you, you’re going in the wrong direction.

I would rather walk in a lower gifting that is right than have a higher gifting with errors. Nobody stumbles on their knees. “Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel” (1 Corinthians 14:12 NKJV).

When you are rightly walking with God and humbly serving the Lord Jesus, it will be there that the gift will do all God intends for it to accomplish. It’s not important how great of a thing you accomplish but only that you accomplish what the Lord would have you do.

Whenever we’re not strong in a spiritual gift, it’s because we’re not weak before God. “As you yield freely and fully to the dynamic life and power of the Holy Spirit, you will abandon the cravings of your self-life” (Galatians 5:16 TPT).

The spiritual gift is not always guaranteed to stay with you, as the Lord will sometimes take the gift away from you. If you are rightly worshipping the Lord and not worshipping your spiritual gift, then you won’t be phased when He takes it from you.

You would not learn the lesson if He gave you the answers before the test was over. It is the testing in the wilderness that prepares you for the promise at the end. It was the Lord “who fed you in the wilderness… that He might humble you and that He might test you, to do you good in the end” (Deuteronomy 8:16 NKJV).

If you have lost your gift and wonder if He will ever give it back to you, then you are wondering if you can ever deserve it again or not. You never deserved the gift to begin with, and the Lord will return it to you when you have returned to Him.

If you ever find yourself not walking in your gift, be sure that’s on you because the gifts are irrevocable. “For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy…” (Romans 11:29-30 NKJV).

If you have not received a spiritual gift, then there are many reasons why this can be. Don’t chase the gift nor think it is necessary for you to serve Him. Chase Him and let Him decide when you might need a gift. Serve Him with your all in all and trust that He will always have you.

We aren’t supposed to chase spiritual gifts but to walk in them. “So it is with you,   since you are so very eager to have spiritual gifts and manifestations of the Spirit, strive to excel in ways that will build up the church [spiritually]” (1 Corinthians 14:12 AMP).

Blessings to you,

Paul Balius

  1. Concerning the gift of our spirit praying by the Spirit in tongues, silently or vocally in a solitary setting, the heart of our Father and the mind of Christ, as supernatural intercession for others, and also as personal edification, which by extension actually assists others and excellently extolls the one triune God, I would like us to read comments from the blogger and readership. 1 Cor. 14 teaches that in a public setting, interpretation is required or else refrain.

At 1 Cor. 14, verses that point for me most poignantly, regarding this marvelous gifting, are as follows (in the AMPC):

1 Eagerly pursue and seek to acquire [this] love [make it your aim, your great quest]; and earnestly desire and cultivate the spiritual endowments (gifts)

2 For one who speaks in an [unknown] tongue speaks not to men but to God, for no one understands or catches his meaning, because in the [Holy] Spirit he utters secret truths and hidden things [not obvious to the understanding].

4 He who speaks in a [strange] tongue edifies and improves himself

5 Now I wish that you might all speak in [unknown] tongues

14 For if I pray in an [unknown] tongue, my spirit [by the]Holy Spirit within me] prays

15 Then what am I to do? I will pray with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will also pray [intelligently] with my mind and understanding; I will sing with my spirit [by the Holy Spirit that is within me], but I will sing [intelligently] with my mind and understanding also

17 To be sure, you may give thanks well (nobly)

18 I thank God that I speak in [strange] tongues (languages) more than any of you or all of you put together

    Thanks kindly
