Heavenly Wisdom

When I look at my life, I reflect on all the foolish things that I have done. I often say the wrong things at the worst times. I am a social flop. I am ignorant about so many things in this world. But God can yet fill me with His wisdom that pours down from heaven. God can fill you up with wisdom too.

God’s purposes for you do not depend on your abilities. “But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty” (1 Corinthians 1:27 NKJV).

The world defines wisdom using the scales of man and the opinions of men who despise God. They teach us to think the gifted speakers and the intellectual giants are the wisest here on earth. But in God’s Word we see that even the wisest of things on earth is foolishness to Him in heaven.

The only way we can receive the wisdom of God is if we set aside the wisdom of men. “Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you seems to be wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their own craftiness’” (1 Corinthians 3:18-19 NKJV).

If you want to gain the wisdom from heaven, you must first become foolish to the things of this world. You will never walk in the wisdom from heaven so long as you seek to be seen as wise to others. It is in our pride where we seek recognition, and it is in our pride where we hinder the wisdom of God.

The world’s idea of a mature Christian is one who has more knowledge of truth. God’s idea is one who lives more truth. Knowledge can know truth, but wisdom lives it. “…we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God…” (2 Corinthians 1:12 NKJV).

The wisdom of heaven is not gained in the academic halls of man, because it is something that comes from heaven and is not born from the minds of man. We must be trained in the truth, but we must receive the heavenly wisdom only as a gift that we ask from God.

Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you’re right. “As the Scriptures say, ‘I will destroy the wisdom of the wise and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.’ So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish” (1 Corinthians 1:19-20 NLT).

If you seek heavenly wisdom, you must always look to heaven. The wisdom on earth seems wise to worldly people but is foolishness to godly people. Heavenly wisdom is always founded on eternal truths and not the passing attractions of this world. Godly wisdom never changes with the times.

You cannot preach with the power of God when you allow your message to be diluted by the opinions of man. “And my speech and my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God” (1 Corinthians 2:4-5 NKJV).

You can be filled with heavenly wisdom because it does not depend on your abilities. If you want His wisdom, then you have to ask Him for it. He will freely give you wisdom if you let His wisdom change you. His wisdom is not a gift to glorify you but a gift for you to glorify Him.

To gain worldly wisdom requires much effort. To gain heavenly wisdom requires much submission. “If you do not have wisdom, ask God for it. He is always ready to give it to you and will never say you are wrong for asking” (James 1:5 NLV).

If you wonder whether another has heavenly wisdom, then you must ask the Holy Spirit to show you. Heavenly wisdom is born out of God and so must be confirmed by the Spirit of God. Just because a word sounds clever does not mean that it lines up to the Word of God.

There are some things that only the Holy Spirit can teach you. “These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches…” (1 Corinthians 2:13 NKJV).

If you have heavenly wisdom in you, then you will have heavenly wisdom through you. Whatever God pours into us, God is expecting it to then pour out through us to those around us. The wisdom of heaven cannot be contained.

If Christ is in you, then His nature will flow through you. Nobody is judged by their knowledge, but how they treat others. “But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy” (James 3:17 NKJV).

The fastest way to be seen foolish in the world is to be filled with the wisdom of God. To the degree you are still bound by the opinions of man, you’re wrong. It will be God who judges you into eternity, whereas man only has an opinion for a day.

The judgment of Christ trumps the opinions of man. “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” (2 Corinthians 5:10 NKJV).

Blessings to you,

Paul Balius

    1. Oh, thank you so much, Luly! It is my deepest prayer that I would be carefully led and inspired by the Holy Spirit, to be just the pen. We have such a powerful God if we would only surrender to Him and all He can do through us. Praying for you to be filled and used of God even more this year! May His anointing be upon you.

    1. Thank you so much! I think for each one of us, as we press in near to the Lord, and His life begins to reign in us, then we just fall down before Him in adoration that He would even reach down to pick us up like a utensil and use us for his kingdom. Blessings to you!
