Just as God gave you natural abilities, He can also give you supernatural ones. “There are diversities of gifts, but the same [Holy] Spirit…the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all: … to another the word of knowledge through the same [Holy] Spirit” (1 Corinthians 12:4,7-8 NKJV).
There is some knowledge that the Holy Spirit may reveal to everyone willing to receive it. He can teach us all things, including the illumination of the spiritual truths hidden in the Word of God. The Holy Spirit can help you to know about Jesus Christ and His life in yours. This general knowledge is not a spiritual gift reserved for the few, but a promise to all who would be willing to let Him bring enlightenment into their lives. Don’t neglect the promises of Christ, for such gifts only go to those reaching out for them.
If you don’t know the Holy Spirit, then you don’t know Jesus Christ, for it’s the Holy Spirit that can reveal Him to you. Jesus taught, “But I will send you the Comforter—the Holy Spirit, the source of all truth. He will come to you from the Father and will tell you all about me” (John 15:26 TLB).
Spiritual gifts do not come wrapped in natural packages. They are gifts that cannot be purchased or attained but only received in humility from the Holy Spirit who distributes them. Whatever you might get apart from the Holy Spirit is not a spiritual gift.
Don’t give a “word of the Lord” that the Lord did not place on you to give. “Then the LORD said, ‘These prophets are telling lies in my name. I did not send them or tell them to speak” (Jeremiah 14:14 NLT).
The Holy Spirit can give you what you can never get on your own. What comes from the Holy Spirit comes from the resources in heaven. You cannot compare spiritual things with natural things, for they are not flowing from the same realm.
So long as you’re thinking in the natural, the supernatural will never make sense to you. “We don’t speak about these things using teachings that are based on intellectual arguments like people do. Instead, we use the Spirit’s teachings. We explain spiritual things to those who have the Spirit. A person who isn’t spiritual doesn’t accept the teachings of God’s Spirit. He thinks they’re nonsense. He can’t understand them because a person must be spiritual to evaluate them” (1 Corinthians 2:13-14 GW).
Teachers who try to explain spiritual gifts in natural terms are still operating from their natural intellect. You must have a spiritual life to teach spiritual truths; otherwise, you will interpret them only through your natural perspectives.
You can’t understand spiritual truth without spiritual understanding. We “do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding” (Colossians 1:9 NKJV).
Don’t reject natural teachers, as they may have many natural things that they can teach you. But when a natural teacher tries to explain spiritual truths, their error will be evident because the knowledge they share makes sense from a natural point of view.
When the Holy Spirit gives you knowledge, it is something far greater than the simple natural knowledge that someone might gain from a book or from a natural teacher. The Holy Spirit can give you knowledge about something that you cannot get in any other way.
The higher you go with the Lord, the more you can see how far you still need to go. “Yes, God’s riches are very great! His wisdom and knowledge have no end!” (Romans 11:33 ERV).
The word of knowledge from the Holy Spirit is a revelation of truth about what has been, what is really going on right now, or what may yet be to come. It’s a supernatural knowledge that cannot be explained in a natural way but only received in humble adoration.
You can be inspired by the words of men, but a word from the Lord changes the course of your life. “Go and tell Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the Lord, the God of David your father: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears; surely I will add to your days fifteen years’” (Isaiah 38:5 NKJV).
The Holy Spirit is God, and God has infinite knowledge of everything seen and everything unseen. The Holy Spirit knows your thoughts and the thoughts of those around you. There is nothing that the Holy Spirit does not know. The Holy Spirit never gets it wrong.
You don’t need more time to accomplish God’s will; you need more of the Holy Spirit. “And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and ability, in understanding and intelligence, and in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship” (Exodus 31:3 AMPC).
The Holy Spirit will only reveal to you the word of knowledge that is necessary to fulfill God’s plans through you to fulfill his purposes for those around you. Sometimes the word will be for you, but more often the word will be for someone else.
The Holy Spirit will sometimes give you the word with clarity, and other times it will be in words that do not make sense to you. Every once in a while, God will confirm the word given so that you will build up your confidence that you are hearing Him clearly.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit will give you a word about others, and it is not to tell them, but to let you know about them. It may be so that you can pray for them, or it may be that you can be alert to those who are against you.
There are some things God reveals to you that you must keep hidden. “It is He who reveals the profound and hidden things; He knows what is in the darkness, and the light dwells with Him” (Daniel 2:22 NASB).
Often, the word of the Lord comes with the burden of the Lord. The burden is a “pressing in,” a “twisting of your arm,” a “weight” that you must release. God will be intent with the burden of speaking a word through you, and He won’t give you rest until you let Him.
The burden of the Lord is not that you would do more, but that you would let Him do more through you. “The burden of the word of the LORD to Israel by Malachi” (Malachi 1:1 NKJV).
You can’t always trust your gut, but you can always trust the Holy Spirit. Learn to know the difference lest you get yourself into trouble. Always test the word against your flesh, for if the flesh agrees, it is rarely from the Holy Spirit. Don’t trust yourself, trust God.
When God is silent, so it must be for the prophet. The LORD said, “I have not sent these prophets, yet they run around claiming to speak for me. I have given them no message, yet they go on prophesying. If they had stood before me and listened to me, they would have spoken my words, and they would have turned my people from their evil ways and deeds” (Jeremiah 23:21-22 NLT).
Sometimes, the Holy Spirit will only give this spiritual gift on rare occasions. Other times, if He has chosen to, you will flow in this spiritual gift like a river. Whatever He decides is right and whatever you receive, you just be humble in it lest He has to take it away.
It doesn’t matter how big your calling is, but only that you do it. “God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another” (1 Peter 4:10 NLT).
Blessings to you always,
Paul Balius
