Committed

You will do what you are committed to doing. You may want to do a lot of things, but rarely will you do anything you are not truly committed to doing. Whatever it is you really want to do, you must first put your effort into being committed to it, and from there, you can begin the journey.

You know what you’re committed to by the things you do. “Commit your works to the Lord [submit and trust them to Him], and your plans will succeed [if you respond to His will and guidance]” (Proverbs 16:3 AMP).

Wanting something is not the same as being committed to something. Sometimes we want things so badly that we think surely this represents our commitment. But wanting something is only the desire and not the determination that is needed to get it.

You never commit with a maybe. “Commit everything you do to the Lord. Trust him, and he will help you” (Psalm 37:5 NLT).

If what you want is counter to the will of God, then even the most committed of saints will flounder. Praise God for disrupting the plans you have that would ruin you. Before you commit yourself to anything, be sure that it is not counter to God’s will for holy living.

Do you want to know what God’s will is for your life? Be holy. Many keep asking, hoping for a different answer. “God’s will is for you to be holy…” (1 Thessalonians 4:3 NLT).

Before you ever commit yourself to a thing, you must first pray to the Lord that He will bless it. We waste so much time chasing after so many things which the Lord has never intended us to take hold of. If you chase what the Lord wants for you, it will be yours.

When you’re in His will and things get in your way, God Himself will go before you. “The Lord your God is going ahead of you. He will fight for you, just as you saw him do in Egypt. And you saw how the Lord your God cared for you all along the way as you traveled through the wilderness, just as a father cares for his child…” (Deuteronomy 1:30-31 NLT).

There are many ways we can be more committed to what we are doing. One of the greatest ways is to make an outward declaration. This may be to family or a trusted friend, and it will be words written or spoken aloud from which you are committing yourself to do.

A word spoken is a thing established. “You will also declare a thing, and it will be established for you; so light will shine on your ways” (Job 22:28 NKJV).

One of the greatest enemies of being committed is our fear that we will never succeed in the thing we desire. We limit our commitments to those things we can easily see the path towards achieving them. Don’t let fear be your god and prevent you from all that the Lord can help you achieve.

It’s more important you believe God can help you than you keep asking Him in your unbelief. “Jesus said to him, ‘If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes’” (Mark 9:23 NKJV).

Sometimes we are committed to something, but then we get sidetracked and lose our way. Don’t give up just because the journey is hard. Lessons learned can only happen when there are failures. Learn to fail with grace, and then lean on the Lord to pick you back up.

Wherever you’re at, it is from there that God can help you. “So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up” (Galatians 6:9 NLT).

If we are struggling to commit to something, we often think it is because we are not strong enough to be committed. But commitment does not take strength but only determination. Commitment is established in the heart but must become firmly planted in our minds. You do what you think.

You must think higher to live higher. “For as he thinks in his heart, so is he…” (Proverbs 23:7 NKJV).

There are some things we are committed to that will take a lifetime in which to get there. In fact, sometimes it is the length of time for which we strive for something that proves just how committed we are to it. God’s timing belongs to Him.

Never doubt what God can do, and trust Him with His timing. “Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!” (Psalm 27:14 NKJV).

There are some things we are committed to that we don’t see any fruit even after many years. The problem we have with our sight is we only look for what we can see. God is accomplishing more through your life than you could ever imagine. Trust Him with what you cannot see.

We must keep our faith focused on the unseen, even when the seen is staring us right in the face. “For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal” (2 Corinthians 4:17-18 NKJV).

Whatever you want to be committed to, whether it is losing a sin or gaining something good, be willing to make an effort to get there. You may have been standing still for a dozen years in what you want, but if you would take just one step today, who knows how much the Lord will help you to get there?

If you want to improve your life, then start. “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand” (Psalm 37:23-24 NLT).

Blessings to you,

Paul Balius

  1. A very timely and encouraging message to not lose faith but to keep pressing on diligently. One day we will see fully the fruit of our commitment and labor in the Lord. Thank you for this reminder.

  2. “One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after…” It is one thing to desire the Lord and His Will but it is another thing altogether to rise up and seek its fulfillment in our life…

May He keep us active and committed to the doing of His good pleasure.

    Good share.
